Global Approach to Scalar Implicatures in Dynamic Semantics

It has been disputed whether scalar implicatures (= SIs) arise globally or locally. Basically SIs should be global because they arise by comparing strengths of whole alternative statements. On the other hand, there are a lot of examples in which local SIs are preferable. Linguists like Chierchia (2002) and Fox (2006) even claim that SIs arise by applying an operator to syntactic constituents to...

Projecting Presuppositions with Scalar Implicatures

I present a system which reconciles free choice permission effect with other scalar implicatures. The core idea is to cluster together alternatives which are obtained by similar transformations of the original sentence (e.g., replacement of a given item with a stronger item). Interestingly, this system can be extended to account for presupposition projection.

Scalar implicatures: experiments at the semantics-pragmatics interface.

In this article we present two sets of experiments designed to investigate the acquisition of scalar implicatures. Scalar implicatures arise in examples like Some professors are famous where the speaker's use of some typically indicates that s/he had reasons not to use a more informative term, e.g. all. Some professors are famous therefore gives rise to the implicature that not all professors a...

Bare Numerals and Scalar Implicatures

Bare numerals present an interesting challenge to formal semantics and pragmatics: they seem to be compatible between various readings (‘at least’, ‘exactly’, and ‘at most’ readings), and the choice of a particular reading seems to depend on complex interactions between contextual factors and linguistic structure. The goal of this article is to present and discuss some of the current approaches...

Scalar Implicatures of Russian Verbs

In this paper we address the common claim that perfective verbs presuppose the initial phase (or a process part) of events denoted by them, and assert their final phase (or a culmination part), while the meaning of imperfective verbs lacks both these components. Different formulations of this claim have been proposed by Padučeva (1996, 2011) and Romanova (2006) for Russian, and by Dočekal and K...
